We rented an SUV for a two-week road trip across the Caucasus. The car handled mountain passes like a champ and when we had a minor issue with a tire, the TripBox team arranged a replacement within hours. That kind of support is rare.

I appreciated how clear the rental agreement was. Everything was in English and well documented. The car was a late model with all modern features. Communication via the app was instant.

Excellent service and a beautiful car. The only tiny hiccup was a 10-minute delay at pickup but the host apologized sincerely and threw in an extra full tank at the end. Honest people, would book again.

Campervan Rental in Georgia — from $100/day

Renting a Campervan in Georgia — Freedom on the Road Without a Hotel

A campervan (motorhome) is a completely different way to travel. You're not tied to a schedule or a hotel: wake up among the vineyards of Kakheti, head to the sea in Batumi by lunch, and spend the night at the foot of Kazbek. Georgia is perfect for this kind of trip — diverse landscapes, excellent paved roads, hospitable locals, and affordable fuel prices.

On TripBox, you can book a verified campervan for delivery in Tbilisi, Batumi or Kutaisi — directly from local owners, with no middleman markups or hidden airport fees.

Driver Requirements for a Campervan

Before booking, make sure you meet the minimum requirements — they are standard for most campervans on the platform:

25
Minimum age, years
4
Minimum driving experience, years
Cat. B
License category
Important: Standard category B is sufficient for driving a campervan with a gross weight of up to 3,500 kg. Before booking, check the exact weight of the specific model with the host — heavy Class C motorhomes may require category BE or C1.

Why a Campervan is the Best Choice for Georgia

Complete Route Freedom

No hotels, no schedules. Stop where it's beautiful and move on when you want.

Save on Accommodation

A campervan combines transport and lodging. For a group of 3-4 people, the total cost is lower than a hotel plus a rental car.

Unique Locations

Sunrise at Gergeti, a night by the Alazani in Kakheti, morning on the coast. In a camper, you'll go where hotel tourists simply don't reach.

Routes in Georgia: Where a Campervan Can Go and Where It Can't

Most of the country's paved roads are accessible to campers. But size and weight impose additional restrictions — especially in the mountains:

Route Road Condition Accessibility Comment
Tbilisi → Batumi (E60 highway) Expressway Excellent Wide lanes, gas stations every 40–60 km. Great start for a camper tour.
Kakheti (Telavi, Sighnaghi, Alazani) Good asphalt Excellent Scenic route, many stops near vineyards. Recommended for first-time camper tours.
Georgian Military Highway → Kazbegi Asphalt Accessible Narrow winding roads — campers over 7 m need caution when passing trucks.
Adjara — Black Sea coast Good asphalt Excellent Campsites by the sea, warm climate. Best place to park with electrical hookup.
Mestia (Svaneti) Winding road Caution Narrow turns. Vans and small Semis will manage. Large integrated motorhomes not recommended.
Tusheti (Omalo) / Goderdzi Pass Gravel and rocks ProhibitedNot allowed for any camper — violates insurance, will damage the chassis. Only 4x4 off-road vehicles.

How to Book a Campervan

  1. Determine your group size. This decides the camper class: couple → Van, family of 4 → Semi or integrated.
  2. Choose the delivery location. Tbilisi (TBS), Batumi (BUS) or Kutaisi (KUT). Many hosts offer airport terminal delivery.
  3. Check the driver requirements. Age 25+, driving experience 4+ years, category B. Make sure in advance — otherwise the host will refuse at pick-up.
  4. Study the equipment. Kitchen, toilet, shower, solar panel, inverter, bed linen — find out what's included and what's rented separately.
  5. Discuss your route with the host. Some hosts restrict usage zones (e.g., unpaved roads). Discuss your plan in advance.
  6. Confirm the booking and deposit. The deposit for campers is usually higher than for cars. Clarify the amount and refund method.

Practical Tips for a Camper Tour in Georgia

  • Fill up in advance in the mountains: On the Georgian Military Highway above Pasanauri, gas stations are scarce. Keep your tank at least 50% full when entering mountain sections.
  • Consider the altitude: When staying overnight above 2,000 m, it can be very cold even in summer. Make sure the camper's heating works on gas or diesel, not just on electrical hookup.
  • Be careful with width: Streets in the historical centers of Tbilisi and Kutaisi are designed for cars. For campers wider than 2.2 m, entering many districts is not advisable. Park on the outskirts and walk.
  • Livestock and winding roads: On mountain roads, cows and sheep can step directly onto the roadway. A camper brakes slower — keep your distance and reduce speed.
  • Grey water: Only dispose of it at designated points — fines for polluting natural water sources in Georgia have increased in 2025. Campsites with dump stations are available in Tbilisi, Batumi, and near Gudauri.
Important regarding insurance: The standard camper insurance typically does not cover unpaved or mountain roads without solid surface. Clarify the exact insurance coverage terms with the host before starting your trip.
Electricity hack: If your route doesn't include a campsite with hookup, choose a camper with solar panels (200W+) and a lithium battery — then the fridge and lights will run all night autonomously.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the minimum driver requirements for a campervan?

Age: At least 25 full years on the date of pick-up. Drivers aged 21-24 are generally refused or face a significant insurance surcharge.

Experience: At least 4 years of continuous experience from the date the license was issued.

License category: For campers up to 3,500 kg gross weight, standard category B is sufficient. An International Driving Permit is not required in Georgia — national licenses in Latin or Cyrillic script are enough.

Where can I park my campervan overnight in Georgia?

Georgia has a developed culture of "wild" camping: stopping by a river, near vineyards, or by a forest is allowed in most places for free. This is one of the main advantages of a camper tour in the country.

Equipped campsites with electrical hookup, showers, and dump stations are available near Tbilisi (Mtatsminda, Lisi Lake), in Batumi, near Gudauri, and in Sighnaghi. The cost for a night with hookup is typically 15–25 USD.

Prohibited: Overnight stays near protected natural sites without permission, blocking access to farmlands, and polluting water sources.

How much does it cost to rent a campervan in Georgia and what's included?

Camper Van — from $100 per day. Semi-Integrated (Semi) — from $140 per day. Integrated (Class A) — from $180 per day.

Usually included: Basic insurance, bed linen, kitchen kit, gas for 1-2 weeks, one set of towels.

Paid separately: Fuel, toll roads, campsite fees, extended insurance (Super CDW), child seat, additional driver.

Deposit — typically $300–600, refunded after vehicle inspection with no damage.

Can I get to Kazbegi or Svaneti with a campervan?

Kazbegi (Stepantsminda): Yes, the Georgian Military Highway is fully paved. Vans and small Semis will get there without problems. For large integrated motorhomes, the winding roads are narrow — caution is needed. The ascent to Gergeti Trinity Church itself is only by local 4x4.

Mestia (Svaneti): The road is paved, but the turns are very narrow. A small Van will make it. A camper longer than 6.5 m is not recommended. From Mestia towards Ushguli — only 4x4, campers are not allowed.

Tusheti (Omalo) and Goderdzi Pass: Absolutely prohibited for any campervan. Gravel, rocks, cliffs — this is territory for expedition 4x4 vehicles.

What fuel do campers use and where to refuel?

Most modern campers run on diesel — it's more economical and better suited for heavy motorhomes. Some vans are gasoline-powered. Always check the fuel type with the host upon pick-up.

Refuel only at branded gas stations: SOCAR, Wissol, Gulf, Rompetrol. They are located along all major highways every 30–60 km. Above Pasanauri (on the road to Kazbegi) and in Svaneti, stations are much fewer — fill up in advance.

Do I need an International Driving Permit to drive a campervan in Georgia?

No. According to Georgian law, an International Driving Permit (IDP) is not required if your national license is in Latin or Cyrillic script. A standard national category B license and your passport are completely sufficient — both for police checks and for activating insurance with the host.

If your license is in a script that does not use Latin or Cyrillic characters (e.g., Arabic, Chinese), we recommend getting a notarized translation or obtaining an IDP in advance.
